Dear Sunila,

We all, like you, want it to end.

However, these latest Kashmir killings, the Staines
killings, and most other communal and politically
motivated riots differ hugely from the Gujarat
reaction to Godhra. The difference is this:

The government and police are supposed to safeguard
the lives of citizens, not to abet murder, rape and
violence. That is why the Gujarat reaction to Godhra
is so unique and so terrible: the police themselves
are accused of abetting murder.

When the guardians of the law allegedly abet murder,
it is time to think clearly and speak out loudly:
regardless of communal background or sympathy.

Regards,

Joel Almeida
