However, these latest Kashmir killings, the Staines killings, and most other communal and politically motivated riots differ hugely from the Gujarat reaction to Godhra. The difference is this: The government and police are supposed to safeguard the lives of citizens, not to abet murder, rape and violence. That is why the Gujarat reaction to Godhra is so unique and so terrible: the police themselves are accused of abetting murder. When the guardians of the law allegedly abet murder, it is time to think clearly and speak out loudly: regardless of communal background or sympathy.
