The police, the government, are but a reflection of the society they live
in. Gujarat is not the first time that rioteers have been treated with
inaction or even helped by the police & the Govt. During the Sikh riots
after Indira Gandhi's death, Union Ministers from the Congress were publicly
on the street inciting rioteers and pointing out Sikh localities, houses and
women and children. And similarly during the Bhiwandi riots the police were
accused of ignoring the plights of the Muslims and even helping the
rioteers. And this happens not only in India but in so many countries. For
example even the judiciary and the police in the US are accused of color
prejudice in their actions. For that matter even George Bush, the President
of America is guilty of conniving with his brother to disallow black voters
in Florida.

When society will change, then will the police, government and politicians
change. Otherwise it will happen time and again. Yes it is wrong but not to
the people who do it at that time. That is why they do it
usually.....because they believe it to be right.

And there is no real difference between the psyche of those who killed
Staines, the passengers in the train at Godhra and the people who were
killed in some other parts of Gujarat later or the barbarism in Kashmir.
They are all motivated by hatred. Hatred born of differences.

When differences among people are treated as colossal like the beliefs and
allegiances to various religions, racial/color prejudices, etc., some people
will use such beliefs to incite people against each other and history
repeats itself with violence and murder and rape and plunder. The key is to
let the walls fall and to get rid of any new walls that are being built.
Organised religion currently has become a monster just like caste or color
had become a while ago (and still is in some parts of the world). It's time
for the walls built by orgnaised religion to be broken down so that we have
some peace in this world.

Cheers,
Sunila
