As Goans worldwide celebrate Goan Heritage Day, Goa Desk (Mapusa) issued a
warning of resistance to a massive hotel project on Sinquerim Plateau. Goa
Desk could also bring it to the notice of the authorities concerned and the
Goan public in general the existence of 2 banyan trees that can be seen
from the Panjim bridge on the top of the Sinquerim plateau. These trees
duas rvores de gralha" are mentioned in the early 16th century Portuguese
rutters to their ship-pilots to recognize their arrival in Goa. If they were
such good land marks at that time, they must have been already very old by
then! A pity that no one so far has declared them to be Goan national
heritage. It is important that Goans concerned with celebrations of Goan
Heritage widen their concept of heritage to include more than just the
language, songs and sorpotel!
