In this course you will explore the way in which you are grounded, how fluid and flexible you are, how much fire is in you and how lightly you take life through the medium of 'Creative Dance'. Keywords for dance expression are: Imagination, Expression, Creativity, Body-Mind Connection and Process. However as in all experiential endeavors the soul of the matter cannot be evoked by words alone and must be felt in person to be understood. Creative dance is different from classical or modern ballet or any kind of American/ European modern dance. It is not based on a special technique, nor does it prescribe steps or movements. Creative dance lessons often start with a theme such as WATER which then evokes images, like 'still lake', 'rough sea', 'quiet river'� and the participants express these images in movement. In this, creativity - and daring! - are involved, because they have to find their own movements. Moreover there is an exchange between imagination and movement, so the inner and the outer go together and body and mind (thinking and feeling) are connected. This dance-form also implies a process, in which both children and adult participants learn about a theme, about themselves and about others they interact with. So in Creative Dance outer exploration, inner discovery and social interaction go hand-in-hand.This process is also reflected in the method which is characterized by three phases: exploration, improvisation and composition. ABOUT JAAP VAN MANEN: Jaap has taught Dance Expression at Theatre School in Holland; in Children's Theatre, Jojo, Amsterdam and at De Santenkraam.
