BASTARDS ! I am shocked to get the news of the breaking of the old bridge, reading Clinton's mail. I am from Velim, but work in Margao and that bridge was one of my most beloved sights. It was a stone arch bridge that had been standing for centuries. So picturesque and poignant, standing alone and desolate amid the changing times. I am outraged that our villagers have become so numb and impotent as not to realise the criminal stupidity of our civic authorities. They could have just stopped it in time and then brought a stay order.
I feel even more strongly now, that all concerned and able citizens of Goa who are active and alert in such things should form a network, a sort of hotline between themselves, so that such shocking acts can be informed on and stopped in time.If Clinton had been able to call up one or two strong and willing activists, we could have physically stopped this. Those pimps who masquerade as city fathers in the Margao Municipality have absolutely no sensitivity to heritage and beauty. While Panjim storms forward with Sanjit,Ashok Naik,Raya Shankhwalker, Patricia Pinto and others, Margao is hobbling along with islands that are being done just for the sake of doing. The MMC could not even paint their own building. They painted some different shades on one wall, like a paint shade-card and then that was it. Jose Inacio De Loyola, the great man who formed the Partido Indiano and built the MMC building along with the New Market and Jorge Barretto, the mayor who built the Municipal Garden must be rolling in their graves. Anywhere else mayors and councillors of a city are held in the highest respect as city fathers. In Goa we have petty businessmen and brokers of power who rule the roost. Their council meetings are more like a fish-market. May the curse (shirrap) of every stone of that beautiful broken bridge haunt every councillor or officer who ordered its demolition ! --Jose Lourenco __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
