With all due respect Tariq, I believe that you have a set of ideals that can not be implemented at this point in history. If India unilaterally took steps to remove it's nuclear arsenal, it's friends would become it's enemies and it's enemies would become a real threat.
Also, one can't ignore the fact that possessing nuclear capability gives India more say on the world stage. India is able to castigate it's opponents at will without fear of retribution. America will not dismantle it's nuclear warheads. Why should India? Concerning the two points raised with respect to "the fallacy of thought", i believe the arguments are quite valid. Especially when one considers the Northern frontier and the threat posed by both China and Pakistan over the issue of Kashmir. Nuclear capability gives a nation-state political and military leverage. you will have to expand on your logic why it wouldn't. In my view, military might combined with nuclear capability is enough of a deterrent to keep enemies at bay. The imaginary utopia that you speak of is the belief that the U.S. empire seeks to democratize the world for (as you put it) "the betterment of society". Rubbish! A rearrangement of your post should read "Let us pause for a moment and reflect where India would truly be" if it did not have a nuclear arsenal at it's disposal. I understand the point that you are driving at: Namely, the need to address the issue of poverty in India. However, one cannot ignore the fact that enemies stand ready to pounce on the sub-continent the moment it shows any sign of weakness. A lion wounded in battle is food for the hienas Sharp claws come in handy. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier.
