You are right. Nuclear weapons were not developed by India to try and solve these type of problems (i.e. Kashmir) - which are based on terrorism. Now, Pakistan may have done so for this reason. But then again I am no expert. There are some schools of thought that say that if it was not for Kashmir, Pakistan would have disintegrated totally into a lawless state. It is close to that now, anyway.

Similarly, the USA will not solve the Al Quaeda problem with nuclear weapons nor will Russia solve the Chechnya problem in this way.

Tariq, please do not misunderstand me. I am not anti-Pakistan. I am just reflecting my thoughts from what I see, hear and read. I would like nothing better than to see our South Asian cousins join together and work for the common good. They would then really be a force to reckon with.

The strategy for India developing nuclear weapons is, I feel, the way Nagesh has outlined. Today India is a strong military power and will soon be a strong economic one.

Today we read that Vajpayee will be paying China a six day visit on June 22. Would this possible if India was weak militarily? I do not think so. One might argue that this visit is taking place because of India's emerging economic strength - but again, this would not have happened if it was not coupled with India's military strength

And, Oh! Yes!

Lets drop the fallacy that makes the rounds that Nuclear weapons have
improved India's security.

If that were the case, then the Kashmir issue would have been solved and
there would have been no Kargil conflict.

In 2003, a nuclear-armed India is no closer to solving the Kashmir issue
than a non-nuclear India was in 1948. This is because the fundamental
problem is a political one and not a military one.
