FOUR SSC STUDENTS MOVE HC: Four SSC students have approached the Bombay High Court at Goa praying that the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Alto Betim, be directed to declare their reserved results immediately. The students argued that the decision of the Board to keep their results reserved was arbitrary and illegal since they had not violated any rules during the SSC examinations. (GT)
DOUBTS OVER GOA AS PERMANENT IFFI VENUE: The Annual International Film Festival of India, which has until now remained a "Caravan" festival in keeping with the policy of spreading cine literacy all over the country, is to have a permanent home in the tourist seaside resort of Goa--a place ideal for carnivals--but film buffs including film societies, feel it is ill-suited for the purpose. OVER-ENTHUSIASTIC COPS SUSPENDED: Two police constables manning a police control room van have been suspended for doing a la Mickky a few days ago. Police sources informed, that the duo who were manning a police control room van chased and manhandled a truck-driver, after the latter overtook them in a manner, which Pratap and Anil did not find very amusing. After the mauling, the vehicle driver complained to a BJP minister about the affair. The two were suspended last week and a departmental enquiry has been initiated against them. (H)
TREES UPROOTED: Several trees were uprooted at many places in the state, following the incessant rains during last 24 hours. A huge tree fell on the house belonging to Mr Bruno Rodrigues of Santawaddo Betalbatim causing a loss of around Rs 80,000. Two trees were uprooted at Dramapur and Sirlim in South Goa. In Vasco, a coconut tree was uprooted and traffic was obstructed for few minutes. The major tragedy was averted when a tree fell on a house at St Cruz. Another tree fell on the wall of Kala Academy. In Pernem a huge tree fell on the cow shed belonging to Hanuman Shetgaonkar, causing damage to the shed. A mango tree fell on the electric wires at Ibrahmpur which disrupted power supply for few hours. (NT)
REMANDED TO JUDICIAL CUSTODY: The four persons arrested by Colva police for committing theft in a hotel in Colva were produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Margao and 14-day remand for judicial custody was sought. According to Colva police, the alleged accused Rajeshwar Nagraj, Mohamed Shakeel, both of Banglore , Shaik Yakub of Mumbai and Arun Sharma of Panjab, arrested last Thrursday night, will be handed over to Margao police to see their involvement in theft cases reported in Margao jurisdiction. CONTRACEPTIVE PILL SPARKS DEBATE: Introduction of the new emergency contraceptive pill (ECP) by the government, has created a flutter in a section of the medical fraternity. The very relevance of this pill has come under scrutiny, with doctors indicating that ECP was likely to promote pre-marital sex. As part of the family planning programme, the Goa government, in keeping with the national programme will soon be introducing the new ECP, which is to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. (H)
CANACONA PAYS DEARLY: As many as 1,155 persons from Canacona taluka were found to be infected with malaria between January 2000 and December 2002, as per the statistics provided by the Department of Health. Every year, the concerned authorities ritually blame the migrant labour force in Canacona as carriers of deadly malarial virus, that of vivex and falciparum. But a look at the civic hygiene maintained by the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC), the health department and the seven panchayats in the taluka suggests that the labourers are not the only culprits for the spread of the disease. BUS ACCIDENT VICTIM SUCCUMBS: The number of dead persons in the accident to the ill fated bus at Chicalim has gone up to 5. An injured passenger, Prakash Surya Chari (64) of Shiroda succumbed to his injuries today at 1.30 pm. The deceased was admitted to Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Bambolim. He had sustained injuries to his head and chest. (NT)
JUDICIAL CUSTODY FOR MURDER: A labourer, Rajesh Janardhan Das, resident of Udipi, arrested in connection with the alleged murder of Malikarjun, has been remanded to 14-day judicial custody . The deceased and alleged accused were working at a construction site at Varca. (NT)
BODY RECOVERED: The Maina Curtorim police on Sunday afternoon found a dead body of an unknown person at Sonsodo, in the hilly area. Police said that the person is aged about 45 years and was wearing a long blue pant and a white shirt. (NT)
HOUSEWIFE SUCCUMBS TO BURN INJURIES: Renuka Shivanand Malgi (23), a housewife, resident of Mangor Hill, succumbed to her injuries at Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Bambolim yesterday at 8.30 am. It is revealed that the deceased had suffered burns while lighting a stove on June 11 at 8.30 pm. The police disclosed that it was not a suicide case. (NT)
FORENSIC LABORATORY PLANS: The proposal of police department to set up forensic science laboratory in South Goa district for improving the quality of police investigation is pending for a long time. Police sources said that there is a need of setting up such a laboratory to improve the quality of police investigations and also to curtail expenses and manpower presently spent on obtaining the report from faraway places like Hyderabad and Kolkata. SAHANI MEET PM: Governor of Goa, Kidar Nath Sahani, who is currently on a visit to Delhi, called on the President of India, the Vice President of India and the Prime Minister and discussed with them matters relating to Goa.The governor has extended an invitation to the President of India to visit Goa, which the latter has promised to do as soon as possible. During the visit, the governor had detailed discussions with the Union Minister for Tourism, Jagamohan, and senior officers of the ministry, and sought help and assistance for accelerated promotion of tourism in Goa. CONSULAR WARDENS MEET: Anthony Gaffino, managing director of Gaffino Ventures INC, California; Gaffino Beach Resort, Mobor, and Mobor Beach Resort, Mobor, is representing Canadians of Goan origin for a three-day conference of Consular Wardens at Oberoi Hotels in New Delhi which commenced from June 13. The event is hosted by the Canadian Embassy in New Delhi and will be attended by all the Consular Wardens, representing different parts of India. Anthony Gaffino, who originally hails from Navelim is Consular Warden for Goa. The agenda for the conference is "Safe evacuation procedures to be followed in an emergency for Canadian citizens". (H)
ITI COURSES FOR DROPOUTS: Considering the large number of school dropouts during standards 9th and 10th of their schooling, government has decided to introduce the ITI courses with 8th standard pass as the minimum entry qualification. The trades and ITIs are as follows: Wireman: ITIs Bicholim and Vasco; Plumber: ITIs Margao, Honda and Pernem; Cutting and Sewing: ITIs Margao, Canacona, Cacora, Pernem, Bicholim and Honda Sattari; Mechanic Tractor: ITIs Bicholim and Cacora; Mason (Building constructor): ITI Vasco; Carpenter: ITI Canacona and Painter (general): ITI Mapusa.
HOTEL CATERING TRADES OPENED: Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar inaugurated the commencement of Hotel and Catering Trades at the ITI Panjim recently. According to a DI press release, Parrikar went round the newly constructed block and evinced keen interest in all the sections of the training provided at the Centre.Minister for Craftsmen Training, Francisco D'Souza was also present. WOMAN DROWNS IN CHAPORA RIVER: Shakuntala Laxman Shetgaonkar (30), a resident of Voilovaddo, Morjim, drowned in the Chapora river on Friday. She fell into the river accidentally and was carried away by the strong current. (GT)
ADVOCATE FINED: Advocate Purshottam M Kantak was enjoying a cup of tea while smoking a cigarette at a kiosk opposite the South Goa police headquarters in Margao. Suddenly a police officer approached him and called him to the police station, where he was handed his conviction order (for smoking at a public place). The advocate had to shell out Rs.100 as fine. VOCATIONAL TEACHERS: The 400 odd vocational teachers in Goa are still a neglected lot. Year after year these teachers, who impart training to students in various courses, are waiting for the government to treat them on par with the permanent teachers. In a private or an aided higher secondary there exist three types of teachers--permanent drawing a salary of about Rs.8,000 along with pension benefits; part-time teachers who draw Rs.4000 salary, double part-times earning Rs.2,000 fixed, irrespective of lectures engaged. MAY QUEEN BALL IN QATAR: The Goan Overseas Association (GOA) held its third Annual May Queen Ball 2003 at the Al-Jewan Banquet Hall, Qatar, with over 1000 guests. The president of GOA, Simon D'Silva, inaugurated the show. The chief guest was pop star Remo Fernandes, accompanied by his wife Michele. GOA honoured the pop star with a memento. Remo picked up a guitar and sang a popular Konkani song "Undra Mhojea Mama". Candida Nazareth of Raia was crowned May Queen 2003 by Remo and Laura Fernandes was the runner-up. (GT)
ALBERTO COLACO FOR KUWAIT: All Indian Football Federation secretary Alberto Colaco will leave for Kuwait to be the chief guest at the final of the soccer league conducted by the Kuwait Indian Football Federation on 27 June at the Kuwaiti Stadia. A Veronica Fernandes said that Goa and Goans should be proud of Alberto Colaco because he keeps the flag of Goa flying higher and higher. (GT)
