Dear Albert, You'll certainly agree that there are ways of recognising the value of a person other than by depicting him/her on a postage stamp. For your benefit and that of all the goanetters who might be interested, I am giving below a list, by alphabetic order, of persons and things not only of the former "Estado da India" (Portuguese India) but also of the Republic of India honoured in the toponymy of the capital city of Portugal, Lisbon:
Abade Faria (Rua = Road) Agostinho Lourenco (Rua) Aniceto do Rosario (Praca = Plaza) Conde de Nova Goa (Rua) Bispo de Cochim, D. Joseph Kureethara (Rua) Cidade de Margao (Rua) Damao (Praca de) Dio (Praca de) [Dio is an old spelling of Diu] Dr. Francisco Luis Gomes (Avenida = Avenue) Goa (Praca de) Ilha dos Amores (Passeio = Walk) [Ilha dos Amores = Isle of Love - that's how the great poet Camoes is thought of having named the island of Anjediva] Ilha dos Amores (Rua) India (Avenida) India (Beco [Pena]) (Beco = Alley, at the "Pena" neighbourhood) India (Beco [Anjos]) (alley at the "Anjos" neighbourhood) Indico (Avenida) (Indico = Indian Ocean) Mahatma Gandhi (Alameda = Boulevard) Moniz Barreto (Rua) Monsenhor Delgado (Largo = Square) [Erroneously spelt "Delgado" instead of "Dalgado"] Prof. Gama Pinto (Avenida) Besides, (a) The main Maternity Hospital of the city is named after the Goan Dr. Alfredo da Costa, and (b) The Ophthalmology Institute is named after Prof. Gama Pinto Are any Portuguese names honoured in New Delhi? How many are (still) honoured in Panjim? Re your I do hope you will act as an ambassador for India in Portugal in publicising the great achievements of our Indian compatriots with the same zeal", I do my bit by writing articles on some personalities, and so does young Constantino Xavier in his website Supergoa.com where he places news from/about Goa/India, where Fernando do Rego (from Fontainhas, Panjim) writes a monthly "Fontainhas Chronicle" (June's having been about the Historic Archives of Goa, the July one will probably feature an interview with the Archbishop-Patriarch and the one in August will be a homage to Maestro Antonio de Figueiredo on the 100th anniversary of his birth on August 20), and where Francisco Monteiro also makes known eminent Goan personalities (though no article has yet come out about Kosambi).
