Dear Albert, Re your "I do hope you do not suggest Salazar or Pompal are deserving of our respect in Goa or India", did I ever make a suggestion like this in any of my writings? I do think, however, that it wouldn't be out of place to honour Pombal (not "Pompal") in Goa, as it was he who as Prime Minister, despite having been sometimes very cruel here in Portugal, abolished the Inquisition in Goa (though soon after his falling in disgrace it was re-established, to be definitely abolished years later) and entrusted the Seminary of Rachol to the Goan clergy (first the Oratorian congregation of Bl. Joseph Vaz and companions and then to secular priests) when he abolished the religious orders in all the Portuguese territories (except the Goan Oratory). And what do you mean by "I would also request you to look at the paintings displayed in the various galleries in Lisbon and the manner in which people of Indian origin are depicted"? and by "Sadly had the Jesuit who went to Coimbra come to Goa and Francis Xavier had remained in the Basque region we would not have been subjected to such despair and deprivation of our dignity and self esteem"? - I agree totally with you when you say "I would rather have had an University established in Goa then the Inquisition".
