Dear Jorge, The first question was rhetorical. It would be useful if you could suggest names of men of eminence of Portuguese Origin who could be honoured in Goa for a start let alone in India.
Pombal's intent to abolish the religious orders particularly the Jesuits had more relevance to Portugal and their role in affairs of the State in Lisbon rather then to the Colonial territories. The abolition or ending of the Inquisition could hardly be attributed to Pombal. He never visited Goa to experience the plight of those who suffered the indignities in the name of the Church and State. Neither did he restore the vast lands abrogated by the Jesuits arbitrarily, in Salsette for the benefit of the Jesuit regime. The people who were required to till the fields for the benefit of the coffers of the Jesuit organisation in Goa were treated with scant respect and poorly rewarded for their services and labour. See writings of Dr. Pius Fidelis Pinto. I stand to be corrected. When Loyala decided to send a Jesuit to Goa initially Francis was not on the list. The one on the original list was the Jesuit who was sent to Coimbra and who founded the University there. Hence my reference. Much of the mythology surrounding Francis and his prodigious feats of conversion were in the same genre as the great publicity given to Theresa of Calcutta. Suspect and this worldly! Sister Nirmala works with the same poor in the slums of Calcutta but the interest of the Vatican in particular seems to be conspicuous by its absence. There is no recognition of the work being done by Sister Nirmala and her dedicated helpers. I ask for no comment but just reflection on the motives of the hierarchy of the Church as handmaids of ................................!. More anon.
