Rightly said Mr.Menezes. A case of rape( actual or imaginary) should not be registered without doing a little bit of homework. Sex evokes strong emotions; high when involved and low when disappointed. Crying wolf is bad enough.Crying rape is worse. It damages the cause for which women's organisations (I presume) stand for. The history of these organisations in Goa is not praiseworthy at all.
If one is molested say so.Do not call it rape. If it is mandatory rape, get the medical evidence on record: or hold your peace. Without evidence, truth is of no consequence in a court of law. A case will fall through like tea through a sieve and leave the dregs of shame for you to bear. The victim will be further victimized by the lawyers, press, public and politicians. If you couldnot avoid the rape, you can at least avoid the unnecessary post rape trauma. If you have a case,by all means collect the evidence and file your complaint and follow it through.I am with you.The law will be with you. You have a hope of being vindicated and partly compensated. Virginity is not the issue.Very few men will know the difference between a virgin and as pro in the heat of the swag-raath. The pro has a better chance of faking virginity, than a virgin has of displaying it.Besides,no groom comes to bed with a head-light or torch to examine the hymen( even in the rare possibility that he knows what it looks like!). The problem of rape is the trauma it causes to the victim. In the case of the Art College girl, the hymen is intact:her mental equilibrium has been further imbalanced by the public debate. For the boys accused without evidence(if there is any,it is not forthcoming on the court records) there is one piece of advice: form an organization(call it Combeancho Saad,if you please) to combat pseudo women's rights organisations like the Bhailancho Saad. May be you too will get funding from the Ministry of Social welfare and empowerment, get to attend conferences and symposia the world over, get press coverage for your weighty statements and have a ball of a time at taxpayers cost. If that is not enough ,you can hitch your bandwagon to gay rights and rub shoulders with celebrities the world over who are happy and gay.
