Goanet next meets in Goa: January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen). Goanet founder Herman Carneiro will be there. See you there! ------------------------------
Dear Jorge Here goes a response from another Konkanologist. He calls oblique for what I had called root-form. Nominative is not the oblique or root form. It is generally or always the vocative case of a noun. A response to your difficulty on "khas" is also provided in Dr. William's post. You may direct any future questions on this issue to him as well. Teotonio R. de Souza From: William Robert Da Silva Date: 01/05/04 06:44:43 To: Teotonio R. de Souza Subject: Re: [goa-research-net] Re: Sh or x in Konknni Dear Teo, Konknni Bhasha Mandal is a loose English translation from nagari script Konkani. People had identified themselves with it and graphic representations are 'conservative' and hard to change. They impinge on the soul's (neural unconscious) template. The stem bhas has oblique form in bhaxe- with suffixes in -cho, -chi, -chem or -k, -n, -cher etc. Strictly, therefore, it could be: konknni bhaxemondoll. If Bhasha Mandal, then Konknni Bhaxamondoll (one word) I think it should be left in peace. The rules of writing Konkani in Portuguese romanised form, and phonetically romanised form and mixed form are not the same. The Hindu follow English romanised form (with some mix of Portuguese forms). Khaxa, however, follows another oblique case. Khas (Divan khas, Khasdar, Amdar ... Perso-arabic in orgin). Khas, khaxa, and khaxelo, -li and -lem. There is no khaxe- form. There is also, parallel, the word taja, taja cup tea, 'the same', 'original.'
