KIDNEY DEAL PLAINT: Police are inquiring into the claims of a 30-year-old
man, Ankush Amonkar of Vasco, who has alleged that a government official (of
the rank of a deputy collector) in connivance with some others coerced him
into donating one of his kidneys for a transplant through the use of bogus
papers. Ankush claims that he was threatened with dire consequences and
'robbed' of his vital organ. However, he has admitted cashing two cheques
worth Rs.80,000 from his bank account opened for him by the official. He
also claimed that he was offered Rs.3,00,000 and a job in a government

RESPONSE FOR VEHICLE SUBSIDIES: The State government's subsidy scheme to replace old vehicles so as to usher in new and safe means of public transport on Goan roads seems to be getting extremely popular with subsidy grants to the tune of Rs.2.5 crore having been disbursed till date. (H)
RIBANDAR HONOURS ALFRED ROSE: At a well attended function, Goa's renowned Konkani singer and all-round artiste the late Alfred Rose, was honoured at the concluding function of the grand centenary celebrations at 7.30 am near Fonduvem Chapel, Ribandar, yesterday evening. Singer Rita Rose received the shawl and award, on behalf of her illustrious husband, from former Tourism Minister and local MLA Ms Victoria Fernandes. The interesting programme was co-ordinated by Adv Aires Rodrigues. As many as 100 local artistes from Ribandar were felicitated on the occasion. A dinner and dance followed with Ribandar's band "Purple Rain" in attendance. An informative souvenir was also released at the hands of PWD Minister Ramkrishna Dhavlixkar. MADKAI VILLAGERS DRIVE AWAY SEX WORKERS: Even as the government grapples
with the proliferation of prostitution in Baina, women engaged in the world'
s oldest profession have discovered fertile ground elsewhere in Goa. A group
of 15 sex workers have made Madkai Industrial Estate their favourite ground
for soliciting customers. Fed up with the nuisance, the locals assembled at
the (estate's) main gate yesterday and drove the women away. (GT)
HC NOTICE TO GOVERNMENT: The Panaji bench of Bombay High Court has issued
notices to the state government and the Corporation of the City of Panaji
for fixing nails on trees for attaching decorative strips of bulbs to
illuminate the city during the New Year celebrations, after terating a
letter as a public interest litigation. (NT) This has reference to a new
item titled "Trees crucified in Panaji" written by Dr Nandkumar Kamat, in an
English daily.
COMMUNITY POLICING: Director General of Police, Seva Dass, has issued
directions to his men manning all 24 police stations across the State to put
into practice 'community policing' concept in right earnest. Police
personnel have been directed to enumerate homes and dwellings vulnerable to
crime, like those of working couples, solitary senior citizens and couples,

PANEL TO INSPECT SOUND POLLUTION: The State government has formed a committee headed by North Goa Collector SS Keshkamat to conduct joint inspection of various places to ensure strict compliance of the provisions of Noise Pollution and to initiate necessary action as per the law. NO DECISION ON POLL PACT: Former chief minister, Dr Wilfred de Souza, is
apparently positioning to get a pound of flesh for his Nationalist Congress
Party ahead of the impending Lok Sabha elections and a certain tie-up with
the Congress at the National Level. Dr de Souza said a decision on seat
sharing between the NCP and the Congress at the Goa-level has not been taken

BURGLARS TARGET PARRIKAR'S PRIVATE AIDE: Burglars decamped with a stereo and
mobile phone, both worth over Rs.10,000, from a government vehicle being
used by Chief Minster Manohar Parrikar's special private secretary Mayuresh
Khanvte. The vehicle was parked outside his residence at Khadpabandh in

NEW E-MAIL VIRUS: A new computer virus capable of harvesting millions of e-mail address from infected PCs was rapidly spreading across the Internet, security experts said. The infection, known as "Bagle" or Beagle", appears to be the handiwork of spammers keen to collect a batch of e-mail address they can then re-sell to other spam e-mail marketers or keep for their own use. "Bagle also contains a code that could turn an infect computer into a veritable "spamming" machine. Security experts said it is patterned after the recent "Sobig" and "Mirmail" outbreaks. Quepem, Francis Manuel Carvalho, was truck by a Margao-bound motorcycle

TIVIM PANCHAYAT REJECTS BPL LIST: Families coming under the below poverty
line list in Tivim panchayat area have been deprived of the benefits from
the state government, as the list of families as per BPL Census 2002 sent to
the panchayat was found to be incorrect.The sarpanch, Ms Leticia Fernandes,
disclosed that many persons, whose names have been included in the list by
the RDA, have already expired seven to 10 years back. (NT)
"GOA EXPRESS" DELAYED: The "Goa Express" along with 20 other trains were delayed on January 19 as rail traffic was disrupted by thick fog in New Delhi. Passengers were stranded on railway stations in Delhi as trains were delayed by over 10 hours. (H)
