(GT) ALL EYES ON SALCETE: All eyes are focused on the eight constituencies of Salcete taluka as the day-long Delimitation Commission's public hearing on the delimitation proposals for South Goa gets underway at the Multipurpose hall, Borda-Margao, at 10.30 on December 14 morning. (H) ST ESTEVAM LOCALS OPPOSE: Villagers from the island of St Estevam held a demonstration on December 13 in front of the office of the Chief Electoral Officer at Altinho, to protest against the Delimitation commission's proposal of transferring their village to the jurisdiction of Mayem constituency from Cumbharjua. (H) YOUTH SETS MARDOL MASJID ABLAZE: A youth believed to be mentally unstable set ablaze floor mats and other items after breaking into Jamadull Muslimin masjid at Mardol on December 12 night. The youth, identified as Sanjay Verma, a native of UP, was, however, caught by an alert hotel owner (Simon Varghese), as an irate mob gave him a thrashing before handing him over to Ponda police. (H) LUIZINHO FLAYS BID TO BURN MOSQUE: The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Luizinho Faleiro expressed shock over the attempt to burn the mosque at Mardol on December 13. (GT) VISA-ON-ARRIVAL FACILITY: The ministry of External Affairs is actively considering extending visa-on-arrival facility to tourism destinations like Goa and Kerala. (H) NEW TOURISM DIRECTOR: The Directorate of Tourism, Panaji, finally gets a new, full-fledged director with the transfer of Goa Public Service officer Elvis Gomes. Gomes, who was the member-secretary of State Urban Development Authority and OSD to Tourism minister, has been transferred and posted as director of tourism, a post which was lying vacant for more than six months. Gomes has been also asked to hold the charge of the Captain of Ports, Panaji, until further orders. (GT) PLYING PERMISSION TO CASINO WITHDRAWN: The government has withdrawn plying permission to Goa's only floating casino MV Caravela, with effect from December 9, 2004. (NT) SOUR END TO PARTY: Forty-five revelers had a miraculous escape when a cruise boat they were having a partying in hit a rock off the Bats Island, Vasco, on December 12. (GT) PROBE INTO MANJULA'S DEATH: The United Tribal Association Alliance has demanded a judicial inquiry into the death of Manjula Gawde, a resident of Advoi-Vante in Sattari taluka in November this year. It is alleged that Manjula was assaulted with a dog's chain and forced to drink poison by a woman accused in the case. (GT) GOA TOPS IN TOBACCO CONTROL REGULATIONS: The ministry of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi, acknowledged that Goa was the bet State in the implementation as well as enforcement of tobacco control regulations. (GT) SAG COACH DIES OF HEART ATTACK: Lancy Sequeira, an athletics coach attached to the Sports Authority of Goa, died following a massive heart attack at SAG grounds, Campal, on December 13. He was 48. Lancy represented Karnataka state and was the former national 800 metres runner. He was also the former Goa national coach. Hailing from Mangalore, Sequeira was residing at St Inez, Panaji, for the last 20 years. He is survived by his wife, a son and daughter Loraine, who is also a budding athlete. (GT) REBELLO ELECTED: Mr Qubertina Rebello was elected the new chairperson of the Quepem Municipal Council through lot system after the other candidate, Ms Maria Cardoso also secured an equal number of votes. (NT) SCOOTER STOLEN: One Vincent JJ Viegas, Benaulim, has complained that his scooty, parked near BPS Club, Pajifond-Margao, was missing. (GT) MAN INJURED: Antonio Inacio Pinheiro, 22, from Devote-Loutulim, fractured his leg when the motorcycle he has driving collided against a Maruti car. (GT) FILM FETE OF DOCUMENTARIES: Close on the heels of IFFI now comes the Film Festival of Documentaries on eminent Indian writers, scheduled to be held on 18 December at 10 at the Black Box of Kala Academy, Panaji. Four documentaries produced by the Sahitya Akademi will be screened. (GT) COMUNIDADES OBJECT: The Association of Components of Comunidades has objected to the draft notification of delimitation as it is founded on "fake and illegally projected so-called revenue districts, talukas, villages and sazas without there being a lawful ownership of land with the state". (GT) KTC BUS CATCHES FIRE: A Kadamba Transport Corporation bus caught fire in a freak accident at Bambolim on December 13 afternoon, when the axle of the bus snapped and hit the diesel tank. The resultant friction between the tank and the axle sparked a fire. Fortunately for the passengers, the driver of bus evacuated all the 30 passengers. (GT) LIQUOR SEIZED: The Excise Department inspectors raided Club Cubana at Arpora on December 11 night and seized liquor valued at Rs.6000.
