The BJP did not claim any great love for the Mahatma and probably the NDA government if it were to come to power would have quietly forgotten the event. The political economy of the salt industry of India was understood by Mahatma Gandhi. The British were engaged in systematic dismantling and destruction of the village and artisanship-based economy of India. They targeted the salt industry in coastal India. http://www.navhindtimes.com/stories.php?part=news&Story_ID=031410 o GOA's LOKUTSAV 2005, converging India on one platform. The closure was at the instance of the court, in a public interest petition (Goa Foundation vs Union of India). These industries had not received the environmental clearance as required under law. http://www.business-standard.com/common/storypage.php?storyflag= y&leftnm=lmnu5&leftindx=5&lselect=2&chklogin=N&autono=183563 o HOLLYWOOD TO FILM IN BOMBAY, GOA, RAJASTHAN: Bombay: Hollywood's director Willard Carrol who has worked with greats like Sean Connery and Angelina Jolie is to start filming for "Marigold" in Bombay, Goa and Rajasthan. Through my relatives I meet them regularly when in Goa and have the pleasure of discussing on various subjects with them, especially environmental issues. In a written interview, they gave me a more insiders perspective on the main questions regarding Goa's environmental past, present and future. --------------------------------------------------------------------- GOAN MARITIME MUSEUM * Docked in cyberspace --------------------------------------------------------------------- Fascinating research by UK-based historian Cliff Pereira reveals that Goan sailors were employed on British ships in the 18th Century. According to Pereira, one ship the East Indiaman Boscawen that weighed 499 tonnes and had 26 guns and upto 90 crew, even dropped anchor at Goa on January 9, 1762. Read all about it in his work 'Goans on British Ships in the 18th Century', which is available in the Files Section of the `Goan Maritime Museum' mailing list. Journalist Melvyn Misquita invites you and your friends onboard the `Goan Maritime Museum' mailing list, which is currently docked at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-maritime-museum/. "Entry is free and tickets are freely available at the site," writes Melvyn. COMMENTS FRANCISCO DA COSTA FROM CALIFORNIA: I am glad that this research is being conducted to honor the thousands of Goans that have left their mark on maritime history all over the world. As a young boy, I loved sailing to Goa from Kenya, Mombasa. Stopping at ports such as Karachi but also the Seychell Islands. As a young boy, I loved going out to sea in the fishing boats with the fishermen from Calangute. Here is San Francisco we have a strong maritime history .... The Portuguese sailed all over the world and I am sure some Goans sailed with them to far away places like Japan and China. Goans have settled down in Macao, in Sri Lanka, Timor but I have not read much about the many journeys they took by ships and boats because no one has recorded them. Keep up the good work. http://www.franciscodacosta.org See this article `Goans away from Goa -- Migration to the Middle East' by Fatima da Silva Gracias: http://www.lusotopie.sciencespobordeaux.fr/gracias.rtf --------------------------------------------------------------------- THOUGHT FOR THE DAY/AICHEA DISSAK CHINTOP * Domnic Fernandes --------------------------------------------------------------------- Rag ek doxea jeant jib monti poros rostin vavurta.
