Dear Clinton:

Thank you for the well authored and informative article on “Saving the Frogs in Goa.” It’s a courageous and commendable effort on your part and your associates, to advocate, inform and educate the general public, on the importance of saving frogs.

Courageous I say, because the hazards of face-to-face encounters with poachers in the middle of the night, is in itself a threat to life. Because, mostly you will find alcoholics, who for the sake of earning a few bucks, are determined to undertake such an activity. Besides, of course there are others who habitually hunt for such delicacies.

Nighttime is perhaps the only time you will find these poachers prowling along in search of frogs, and one needs to be extremely careful in one’s approach, -- for reasoning and politeness may not always work, especially if a poacher is found intoxicated.

I was once almost attacked by a bunch of drunks in Goa, who were blocking traffic with their car parked right in the middle of the road, and headlights left on high-beam; they refused to budge. Any sense of reasoning and polite persuasion did not work with these goons, to allow passage of vehicles. Being under the influence, they even threatened people with use of force. Sadly, these characters wield the power and support of some politicians and the police too are in their pockets.

Again, thank you for your worthy effort. Keep up the good work!

Best wishes,
Joe Vaz
