Dear Fernando and Friends
While this dialogue (however intense) about the script is going on, I
would like to add my personal experience about the language.
This happenend in 2001 in a Government Office in Margao.
I was in Margao to deal with the issue of "succession certificate" - my
parents having died without a will. I was told that birth certificate
could not be traced - therefore it was believed that by the officers
concerned that either the declared date of my birth for the search of
the certificate was wrong or I did not give proper names of myself or of
my parents.

My stand was of course different.
All discussions were being held in Konkanni.
Finally I was told by the Government Officer (in Konkanni) that *he was
willing to conduct the search if I could provide additional confirmed
data: SSC Certificate (the word used was Matric Certificate)*
Well, my response to that request / suggestion was simple: *Sir I have
not passed SSC.* He rebutted: *So you are not educated then*. My simple
answer was: *If you say so, may be not for you!*
You can draw your own conclusions! or should we say: HEM SONSARANT
SOGLEM KUI -
Regards
berardo
