Various Scientific and Academic institutions including the Goa
University observed the National Science Day today by opening their
offices and laboratories to the general public for interactive sessions.

A series of lectures on Raman Effect announced on this day by noted
physicist C V Raman, and programmes to educate the masses on India's
achievements in science and technology over the years marked the
celebrations. The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) at Dona
Paula, National Centre for Antarctica and Ocean Research (NCAOR) in
Vasco-da-Gama, Goa Science Centre and the Goa Astronomical Observatory
organised various programmes on the occasion.

Goa University Vice-Chancellor delivered the C V Raman memorial lecture
on 'Contributions of Sir C V Raman' at the Goa Science Centre, which
also conducted quiz competitions for students. The university threw
open all its departments to the public to explain the progress they
achieved, particularly in the field of scientific research. It has also
planned to conduct drawing and elocution competitions for high school
students, besides inviting them to the departmental laboratories to have
the feel of science. The ice-core laboratory in the NCAOR, which mimics
the sub-zero Antarctica climate was the star attraction for public. At
NCAOR, the scientists have been studying the past climates with the help
of various details brought by brought by the expedition teams from the
icy continent, for preparing future climate models.

They are also studying the significance and application of genes
isolated from microbes which have been living in the icy continent for
ages. Meanwhile, NIO had also made progress in various fields of
research on ocean, including the Horseshoe crab, considered the "living
fossil" which has several beneficial applications in medicine.(UNI)
