Did this have something to do that both these communities were rather Westernised, somewhat (in different ways) priviledged during colonial rule with preferences in enterprise or jobs, also having gained from colonial trade or expansion, and not really competing in the same place in cities like Mumbai (but probably playing a complementary role with each other)? --FN
