I don't know about the time you grew up in India, but NOW it's
certainly an insult to call Tamilians, Malayalis, Kannadigas, Telugus
and even dark-skinned Maharashtrians and Goans a "Madrassi".
Perhaps it will help if I told you that calling a black a "Negro" was
not a pejorative a few decades back.
