Your info that your "brown" son was listed as "white" as late as 1959 in New
York was quite surprising to me. This is in relation to everything I had
read about the USA, when at that time, convulsions about 'race' were
extensively reported in the media. I do know however that, the issue of
'race' was played out quite differently in different parts of the USA.
It still does according to some contemporary writers who tend to
characterise the UK by the continuing dominance of class, albeit with some
change, (with 'race' and even religion based disadvantage featuring close to
class), and the USA featuring predominantly by 'race'.
This reported view may provoke some lively discussion. Hopefully, it will be
calm, educational and informative for those of us who would like to learn a
lot more rather than be attacked by some people trying to score points in
discussion!
