It brings a load of memories to mind after going thro' the post of Veronica
Fernandes on the passing away of Ms Angela Gomes, Goa's promissing women's
football coach. The Goa Su-Raj Party had engaged in a drive to put together
a relief fund for Pratima Gaonkar, another Goan promissing athlete who was
driven to commit suicide thro' blackmailing by her own coach (see below).

The mother of Pratima Gaonkar received a cheque for the sum of Rs21800/-
collected by goasuraj from among its well-wishers and friends deposited into
a special FD Account opened for Pratima Gaonkar at Bank of India(Miramar),
at the hands of Mrs. Nandkumar Kamat (Melinda Kamat) at the Party's office
at Mapusa. (hit www.google.com pratima gaonkar 2000 for the full report).

Needless to say that the Party is distressed at the way Dr. Suzane D'Souza
has been humiliated at the hands of the SAG and now the untimely death of
Angela Gomes. That Dr. Suzane D'Souza had to knock at the doors of the High
Court of Bombay at Goa to rectify the injustice over her emoluments is
another thing altogether. Who are these guys who treat our persevering Goan
athletes in this manner? The people of Goa and largely the sporting
fraternity in Goa must make it a point to read the Chapter X (at Page 62) of
the Party's ROAD MAP FOR GOA under Sports & Leisure. That is not the end.
The Party will revive the cases into the deaths of Pratima Gaonkar and
Angela Gomes and bring the culprits to book. This is a promise the Party
makes to Sports loving Goa and Goans.

Pratima Gaonkar.

Came from an abject poor family from a remote village in Sanguem , South
Goa.Lost her father at a young age. Subsistence of the family was through
field work as daily labourer for Pratima and her mother. She has a younger
brother and a sister. Was picked up for the athletics because of her
phenomenal running capacity. Ultimately she represented India at the Brunei
Assian Games where she got the Silver Medal in 100 meter women. Immediately
after this, she attended a training camp at Punjab where she was discovered
to be having sexual deformities. It is claimed that her coach was aware of
her deformities and was blackmailing her for extortion. Before she committed
suicide by jumping into the local well, she is believed to have received a
telephone call. It is believed to be from her coach. The police, the coroner
and the sports authorities should not have divulged the post-mortem report
so brazenly it is felt specially when her deformity could have been checked
out from the beginning and if counseled appropriately, she would be living
today. A lot of funds which were pledged to her were cancelled or reduced
drastically as soon as she died. Her family lives in a thatched roof hut and
mostly in deprivation. This is the reason for extending some financial help
to the family, because Pratima was their hope, their rising sun.
