I'm a little confused as to why I am receiving this mail, given that (a) I am not a member of goanet, and (b) I am a secularist who prefers to keep personal religious views out of public debate, and definitely out of political debate. However, since the subject matter is in my face, let me just say that as far as I know, sainthood is not supposed to be a competition or a political race. Lobbying for "OUR" spiritual candidates in is not going to make anyone more or less holy. As for exerting global pressure, it seems to me there are hundreds of far more pressing issues with which to concern ourselves than whether or not a Goan is becomes a pope or a saint--global warming, for instance. The fact that an estimated 25000 people die of hunger and poverty in the world EVERY DAY. The virtual genocide of the Palestinians. The global trafficking of children for the purpose of cheap labour and/or prostitution. The dangerous descent of Iraq into civil war and the complete destabilization of the Middle East. I could go on and on, but I'm sure you catch my drift.
