Dear Mr Albert (from Saligao, residing at Mapusa and critising it!):
Please tell me what you think of:
* Mr Keith Vaz from Goa, who became MP, MEP and Minister in London.
* The current mayor of Lisbon.
* Pratapsing Rane or Harish Zantye (strictly-speaking, the Fujimoris
of Goa, but over a longer period of time, many centuries).
* Vassalo e Silva, not a Goenkar as far as I know.
* 451 years of rulers from a non-neighbouring country, ruling over Goa
* The pre-Portuguese Adil Shahi and other Hallakannada-deploying
empires, and post-1961 rulers who just thought it fit to fight among
themselves (all good Goenkars).
Do we use different standards for others and ourselves? Why not rake
up an issue about all those Pednekars staying in Bardez and
effectively contesting not-just-panchayat-elections? After all, some
of the religion-is-politics lobby currently want to settle scores for
the 'ethnic-cleansing' the Portuguese did four centuries ago, with a
new form of modern-day ethnic-cleansing (on religious lines, if not
ethnicity). Where do you stop? Where do we accept that Goa is a
changing entity, has been, will be?
Some Goan Hindus have names which are clearly of non-Goan origin;
others came in without surnames and picked them up in Goa. Are we so
sure that all of us with Cristao names are of Goan origin? If this is
not the case, what is the cut-off point for accepting someone as
"Goan"? Sorry to raise too many questions.
FN (non-Saligaokar, resident of Saligao and doing my bit for the
village... maybe)
