I am not able to understand exactly what George Menezes is saying. He begins
with mentioning the embarassing (his word) question posed by the Supreme Court
of India, namely whether there is caste system in Christianity. In his whole
article he seems to be answering in the affirmative.
But the solution he proposes is that the so-called dalit Christians should be
given reservations in government jobs. Can George tell how this will remove the
discrimination that these 'dalits' face from the upper-caste Christians? For
example, will such a reservation remove the physical wall that exists in some
of the cemetries? Or will it automatically enable the 'dalits' to sit wherever
they wish to in chruches, instead of the 'back benches earmarked for them'?
The demand for the reservations is actively supported by the Christian priests,
bishops, etc. It is also actively supported by the various social Christian
organisations, as George himself says. Would it not be better that they all
first work towards removing the discrimination within the Christian churches?
After all this is within their control.
