The trouble is different people would derive different morals from this story. Many would forget it and continue to believe whatever they believed in the first place. These kinds of quack remedies and multi-level marketing scams are on the rise precisely because they can exploit this basic human weakness - the ability to selectively remember anecdotes that reinforce their preexisting beliefs and forget those that run afoul of them.
