Hi Selma
Many thanks for the many issues you have raised on the complicity of the
Church in caste. They were much appreciated.
My point is that the Church in Goa has failed to ever admit that casteism
within Catholicism is wrong. I'm sure that if the Bishop in Goa indicated to
the Pope that he is prepared to make such a simple disclosure, the Pope would
not find it difficult to agree. After all, the Vatican has repeatedly stated
that racism is wrong and casteism is definitely a distinct form of racism.
I will now refer (without elaboration) to the last time a Pope had to act
because casteism was blocking the acceptance of Raul Gonsalves to become Bishop
of Goa and this was found unacceptable to the Vatican. So there is a precedent
that others in Goa can explain more fully. The alternative is to splash the
news about the Church's complicity in caste on to the world's media. I feel
that the Vatican would act quickly when this was done especially if a draft of
an article was sent to the Bishop of Goa and the Pope in Rome in advance of its
publication.
There really is no need for anybody to keep putting off the action needed to
get rid of this diabolical thing called casteism within Catholicism. Sustained
pressure tends to get results and the last thing to do is to stop insisting on
a legitimate demand.
With kind regards
Cornel

Dear Cornel,
With respect to the Church, the lowliest priest in Goa
is answerable to the Bishop, who in turn is answerable
to the Vatican. It is a hierarchical institution, and
individual members cannot take decision on
representing the Vatican as a whole. The Vatican has a
Press Office, that decides what statements will be
made, hence priests on Goanet or any priest you may
meet cannot offer public apologies for the caste
system that prevailed during the Portuguese Era.
