Folks,
I am glad this debate has come up on Goanet as I had no idea how entrenched
caste is with Goans. I am one of the lucky ones who have had nothing to do with
the issue since my parents generation tackled the same 50 years ago in
Tanzania. I do not think there are any Goans there, younger than 40, that are
aware of what caste they supposedly are.

For those of you who are thinking of migrating to Toronto please be aware that
the moment you decide to do so, you are simultaneously relinquishing any
influence on who your offspring marries. Educated young people demand that they
go out, find and marry a partner of their own choice. A parent here will
consider himself extremely lucky if his child marries someone from his own
religion. A son/daughter-in-law from your own community is a pipe dream,
unless, of course, your child is unable to think for her/himself and agrees to
marry someone daddy/mummy wants.

A few seconds ago I turned to my two year old daughter and asked her what caste
she was. Without looking up she replied, "Princess". That is the very essence
of the caste system. Instead of every child being born a potential
prince/princess, some have have proof, from God, that only their kids are
prince/princess and that other kids are there only for other purposes.

Lastly, I must contend that if a person cannot denounce caste in the strongest
of terms, s/he is essentially just another propagator of the system.
