Even closer portraits merely serve to paint a
superficial public self-portrait of being egalitarian.
What is much harder is knowing what it is to be the
person in the portrait. I would have said putting
yourself in her shoes, but I realized that she has
spent half her life walking barefoot on stones and
thorns, and the other half on molten tar.
