Hi Santosh,
I have some idea of the conservation efforts in India. I have visited two
reserves in N. India and was suitably impressed. The very fact that the person
who captured the leopard in Goa wanted to return it to the wild, is a testament
of how much society has progressed.

The problem I was trying to write about is the lack of progress on the govt
side. Specifically, the lack of financing. My guess is that the official who
captured the leopard did not have access to tranquilizers. If the guy was sent
by the state, there is the possibility that there are no tranquilizers in the
entire state. No conservation effort is going to work without tranquilizers.

Education and research both require money. International recognition always
helps in raising both funds and awareness. I am looking forward to the day when
local businesses will work hand in hand with the environmentalists and not with
the politicians, as is the case today in most corrupt societies.

I have no need to see other wild animals as we have our own menagerie in Goa.
Between my relatives and me, we have an assortment of monkeys, parrots, cobras
and one tiger. There have been several times when I would have used a
tranquilizer dart if one was handy.......
