From: edward desilva <[email protected]> Subject: [Goanet] What happened to the Great Goan Poie?
Like Edward, I too lament the demise of the humble poie. I remember a time in the sixties when a poie cost around 6 paise and the flavour was unbeleveable. In Moira, we had a baker at Moira bridge (Pular as it is known to locals) who produced wonderful poios. What passes of as a poie today is just ordinary bread which has been dipped in rice bran prior to baking. Eating a poie is filling and sustains diabetics while ordinary sliced brown bread doesn't literally fill up the vacuum. In Mapusa, of all the bakers, Babaji's poios seem to be the best, though I wouldn't say they come up to 'early post 'liberation'' standards. There is a bakery in Porvorim called Dynasty which supplies their products through Ajay Supermarket, Mapusa, and who are receptive to customer feedback and I am trying to get them to make an authentic loaf of brown bread. The stuff offered by Spencers/ Monginis/ other local bakeries is rather oily and salty. Can Goanet readers help us source authentic brown bread/ poies? There are bakeries like Hot Bread which offer sophistacated loaves, but these wouldn't suit the common man's budget.
