Please note Frederick's sly insinuation above - another political gimmick.

The truth is I was simply stating what was reported in the national and
international mainstream media at that time. Every single report I read stated
that the violence was "RETALIATORY" or in "RETALIATION" for the murder of the
Hindu VHP swami and his associates.

I think the following examples of such mainstream media reports should satisfy
most independent observers. Please note the use of the word "retaliatory" or
"retaliation" in them. I had provided at least one of these reports at that
time.

“Orissa arrests 2 Christians for Hindu leader's murder
…..The murder unleashed a wave of retaliatory attacks by Hindus on Christians
in the rural Kandhamal district of Orissa -- leaving at least 35 people dead --
that has been a zone of Christian missionary activities for decades.”

“Kandhamal burns, six more killed
…...The BJP on Tuesday condemned the recent spate of violence in the state, but
party spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad denied that the miscreants involved in
burning alive a woman in Bargarh, reportedly in retaliation to the Swami’s
murder were from the VHP.”

“Faiths Clash, Displacing Thousands in East India
……In the retaliatory violence, 500 houses were burned.

“Maoists claim they killed 'fascist' VHP leader in Orissa
…...Laxmanananda's killing sent several parts of the state into a spiral of
violence in which at least 12 people have been killed with several villages and
prayer halls attacked by Hindu fundamentalists in retaliatory action.”

“Orissa police nab Maoist suspects in connection with Hindu seer's murder,
Christians continue to live in fear
……The arrests made were the first in connection with the the murder of Swami
Laxmanananda Saraswati in August by suspected Maoists, which unleashed a wave
of retaliatory attacks by Hindus on Christians, who have been blamed for the
killing.”

“Rights groups urge US, EU to end Orissa violence
……."Mobs have been attacking minority Christians in retaliation for the killing
of local religious leader Swami Lakhmananda Saraswati," says the letter, adding
as of August 27, at least nine people have been killed, a nun gang-raped, and
churches and houses have been destroyed in at least 12 districts.”

“Government let us down: Orissa bishops
……The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal have been blamed for the
violence against Christians, the majority of whom are tribals, after the two
organisations retaliated following the August 23 killing of VHP leader Swami
Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his aides.”

“HRW asks FM of major powers to end Orissa's violence
……"Mobs have been attacking minority Christians in retaliation for the killing
of local religious leader Swami Lakhmananda Saraswati," says the letter, adding
as of August 27, at least nine people have been killed, a nun gang-raped, and
churches and houses have been destroyed in at least 12 districts.”

“Shoot-at-sight order issued in Kandhmal
……The trouble started after VHP leader Laxmanananda Saraswati was killed on
Saturday night. The saffron group then retaliated by setting fire to an
orphanage killing a worker and injuring a priest.”
