Dear VRR, I find it difficult to believe that any Goan would be able to reside or work in the UK unless, one was a qualified professional, or either holding an EU passport or EU rights to work in the EU (following marriage to an EU citizen).
Having personally been to Swindon, and having met some of the folks there, I'd venture to say that a good number of Goans in Swindon possess EU nationality.....and If they have worked (legally) for a certain number of years in the UK, are likely to be in possession of British citizenship. I cannot suggest that 'they should stop looking at the results of Goa's elections'. They have every right to look and even to have comment. But that is it. They have no right to expect anything from India......unless they are (preferably tax-paying) citizens of India, and No other country. Even if they are tax-paying citizens of India, I believe that the Right to a Job is not guaranteed in the Indian Constitution. (I stand corrected if I am wrong on this) It is highly competitive out there - We Goans would do well to upgrade our skills at every opportunity and work very hard indeed. We can have our Tiatr, Dance, Kirtan, Natak etc ....but we also need to do the best we can do. As I noted in my previous post, I know (and know of) a significant number of Goans who are (quietly) right up at the top of the achieving and earning (honestly) ladder. They are not looking to any politician anywhere for any handouts. This "letter from Swindon" forgets that for over a 100+ years, Goans have hurdled across all kinds of obstacles to admirably hold top positions all over the world ....including in Portugal, Brazil and the US. Perhaps intentionally...we are not told all this by the Press in Goa. Perhaps, we are only told that Goans are good for Fun, Football and Feni......and now ....'Fukot'. What a lot of "Fottim", I thought ....till I read this "letter from Swindon". I seriously hope that it does NOT represent the majority view of the Goans from anywhere including Swindon. Ok now ...time for a break from this jc == Victor Rangel-Ribeiro wrote: It seems relevant to ask ..... just what nationality the Goans in Swindon claim to have. I suspect that they are now either full-fledged British citizens, or on their way to achieving that exalted status. If that is so, they should stop looking at the results of Goa's elections and should also stop hoping to get some relief for their plight from our politicians here. They should turn instead to their local MPs in the British Parliament. I do not know Mr. Sardinha, but this I know: Mr. Sardinha owes them nothing.
