Floriano, I do support you on Konkanni as the medium of instruction for primary schools I would most certainly like to put to ease a lot of Catholics who think, that the kids who study in Konkanni medium schools, will loose out in this big wide competitive world, let me assure you'll, that I was fortunate to have studied in a Catholic school, in the mid 60's and the early 70's, where the primary school (1st to 4th) was in Konkanni medium, and we had just one English subject, initially it was difficult learning and a struggle to write in "Devnagri" script, but most us made it fine in the end, and the transition to English medium in the 5th standard, wasn't too difficult at all and today I am proud to say, that a lot of my fellow students, who are spread world wide, are doing just fine if not excellent, in this big wide competitive world, and I am sure most of my fellow students would be as good as any, if not better than the other students of the English medium schools. The medium of instruction at the primary level has to be in the mother tongue, because that's what the kids understand and absorb it faster and secondly how do we develop the love and the knowledge of our mother tongue in our kids ? We say we are Goans, so why not encourage our kids to learn our mother tongue, so that our Identity and culture is kept alive ? Or are we ashamed of our identity and our culture ? I don't know why such a big fuss is being made about Konkanni being made the medium of instruction in primary schools ? Yes, we need English for our further studies, and for that the students have full five year in school to master the language plus the first four years wherein English is taught as a subject, if that is not enough than the child certainly needs extra help, which can be provided by parents or teachers. I am also aware that not all schools have the quality teachers required to impart good education to students and that's what we should fight for with the Authorities, to provide good quality and qualified teachers in schools, I have seen and spoken to some of the so called teachers, in government schools in and around our village and the less said the better, probably they are the people who must have paid some of the ministers a good bit , to get government jobs or must have been "Vastha Devi ka Pujaries". My point of view is, Konkanni medium, a must for primary and the quality of teachers is very important specially during the time of transition to English medium, I am sure if the child is serious about his or her studies then the medium of instruction will never be a question to for us to debate. My request to the parents to support the cause for Konkanni but at the same time insist on quality qualified teachers in schools. Btw, Floriano, I still do my tables in Konkanni and my kids are often impressed and certainly don't look down on me. Bara eke bara, bara duke chobis, bara trik chetis, bara coake atechalis, bara panche satt ......No, I don't want to show off, but sent a message that learning in Konkanni does not make a person less dignified or less qualified for that matter.
