Dr Gomes was born and grew up in Malaysia. Also, he can converse somewhat in 
Konkani, though with an accent.

His much older brother has stories of the special treatment accorded to Goans 
in Malaysia during the Japanese occupation, by virtue that they were 
Portuguese...
