Hi Manuel,

We read in the Bible. "Forgive the Sinner" "Punish the Guilty". As far as punishment is concerned it varies as according to the seriousness of the crime.

Here, the case is of premeditated crime to kill maximum number of people. Yes, If the section of the people earmarked to be killed was say, politicians, army men, police etc and innocent getting in the way being chopped in the bargain, one could have understood that it was an ideological war. But indiscriminate killing of innocent people for no rhyme or reason is a heinous crime. Such persons must get death. Simply meaning that ''You don't respect life .... the law denies the right for you to live " . If this is going to make a martyr out of the criminal, so be it.

What guarantee is there that the same person still living with a life sentence will not plot to kill more directly or indirectly?

Take the instance of the Portuguese in Goa. There were no robberies, murders etc. meaning these were very rare. In fact my cousin was murdered in cold blood circa 1958. The culprits got life in aguada jail but came out as freedom fighters as pensioners for life after operation VIJAI. SO???????????????????

I still maintain that life sentence is ok for a not so serious or heinous type of murder/crime which is not premeditated. The sentence could even be commuted for good behavior but watched.

If the world is to be free of heinous crimes, I feel that something like 'Hanged...Drawn... and Quartered' must be freshly redefined. In Saudi Arabia they chop of the hand if you are caught for stealing. They Chop off your head for murder or rape. I don't think there are any heinous crimes in SA.

As for your comment 'Extremist Islamists will have hopefully vanished from the face of the earth.', this is not possible because Islam (I think) is an ideological warfare with the rest of the world. It cannot exist without war to impose its supremacy. You must listen to Lt. Col. Allen West at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgZppLvjvaE

Hi Floriano,
You have given a fair deal of thought on the subject and perhaps the punishment handed out by the High Court is justified. I for one would have been pleased if the sentence were 'Life in Prison with hard labour'. This will enable him to contemplate the magnitude of the crime he committed and he would perhaps never be at peace. This is the right punishment. If he is executed, then in the minds of the Jihadists, he has become another Martyr to their cause. This way, we deprive him and his cause of a martyr and delay his supposed direct entry into heaven and his awaiting Virgins will also have aged by the time he dies and goes to meet them. Perhaps at that juncture, Extremist Islamists will have hopefully vanished from the face of the earth.
Wishful Thinking maybe.

Manuel (Eddie) Tavares.
