Dear de Souzaji, Have you just woken up? This denigration was part of the anti-Goan propaganda generated by the media - many decades ago. Research Bollywood films and you will find the origin of this thought process. Even look at the role of Dimple Kapadia's 'father' in Bobby.
Even Nehru thought little of Goans ....and referred to them as 'just cooks and butlers'. (Some recent semi-political operatives have described NR-Goans as 'toilet cleaners' of Arabs and Europeans.) That same Goan even rubbished the fact that Goan houses of a few decades ago did not need to have windows ....(perhaps) because there was nothing important to steal. He now writes about Goan women not feeling safe. BTW: Here is what a certain G. Rahul wrote about Goans in Rediff. Com: [1] http://www.rediff.com/travel/1996/goa.htm "What sets the 102 km coastline of Goa apart from other beach paradises is the laid-back, don't-care-be-happy of the punch-drunk Goans, who when they are not snoring off sarpotel lunches, are ready to break into song and dance at any hour of the day." Read what this Haryana State Government brochure says about Goa [2] http://www.rediff.com/news/2001/jan/18goa.htm Welcome to Goa, the land of taverns, feni, carnival, churches and carefree Goanese. There are hundreds of taverns all over Goa, an integral part of carefree Goan life. The most popular drink is feni, a local brew distilled from cashew or coconut. The above + more at http://www.colaco.net/4/GoaLib15.htm We also would do well to remember How the following study (done on industrial workers in Goa) was published in the Times of India and headlined to indicate that a large percentage of Goans were alcoholics. Chagas Silva M, Gaunekar G, Patel V, Kukalekar DS, Fernandes J. The prevalence and correlates of hazardous drinking in industrial workers: A study from Goa, India. Alcohol Alcohol. 2003;38:79–83. Important to note two points: (a) The Goan journalist who scripted that article on the Times, defended the article by arguing that (1) Alcoholism is a problem in Goa (2) Chagas Silva was a young doctor. (b) The main author of the study, when asked why he came to a conclusion which was not studied, advised (in writing) that most studies in India are fudged anyway. good wishes jc soter <[email protected]> wrote: Is the media wrong in depicting Goa as the rape capital? What is the impression about goans in the minds of the general public of India? They are given the impressions that goans are doing nothing but lazing on the beach with booze and fun loving semi-nude women. Students studying in colleges outside Goa may have a better understanding of this reality. Secondly, if just a few cases of rape are sensationalised it does not mean that the reality beneath the surface is different. Young women are definitely not safe in Goa any more and it is only the courageous who sit up and fight back. Women are looked as commodities by some industrialists, some politicians and the tourism industry.
