To Goanet - Soter,
The judicial process, such as it is, will take its course. As a private person, I am allowed to have my views on the matter. I have referred to Mickky as a suspect, so I have allowed that he has not been pronounced guilty. My point was about a sitting Chief Minister who pays a courtesy visit carrying a parcel of biryani to a man in police custody. Given the history of law enforcement - the lack of it - in the state, the optics of this episode stinks. Questions can be raised of obstruction of justice, of intimidation/manipulation of police personnel, and so on. One more thing - the "innocent until proven guilty" is a convenient line for people to use here. But it works best only in those countries where the institution of law and the judicial process work. India's is a dysfunctional system. Taken to its logical conclusion, there is, for instance, no corruption in India. Or in Goa. After all, how many politicians have been charged and convicted in a court of law? By your thinking, Narvekar and Ravi Naik must be considered clean guys for no court has yet convicted them. In a narrow sense you are right. But pardon me if I call them skunks who should be in jail. There is context to everything. "Innocent until proven guilty" is a great principle - but it works best in a working democracy; in a kakistocracy like India it becomes a travesty. Political Opponents? The media? Who? Is Micky a criminal by the mere fact he is suspected to have a hand in someone's death? Should we treat a suspect as a criminal even before he is convicted? His only fault was that he evaded the police for over a month, which actually reflects poorly on his legal advisors. What we are witnessing is a blatant human rights violation in the name of justice. -Soter
