With due respect, and I don't mean this to be personal... but that "genteel world" could also be called part of a tiny Goan elite, a part of which never got accustomed to the demise of colonialism.

Which is why, at times, the changes of the last 50 years -- corruption, communalism and a whole lot of other problems thrown in -- do seem to be a somewhat better alternative!
