No dear Ven... a very definite no! Goa Governmentt had nothing to do with any of the laurels that were bestowed upon Mario....national or international...
For all I may surmise, efforts mat have been galore to thwart the awarding. He did'nt need their patronage, either...vastly superceeding them in that area... His guests used to number from the highest echelons of the socio-political constellation that often sought his clout rather than otherwise or, simply needed nothing other than enjoyment of mutual company....company 'that is quite good and wise.....' Just one instance out of so numerous: Once, a while ago, on his courtyard veranda, in Loutulim, having conversed animatedly with a nice...superbly erudite and affable gentleman, Mario enquired if I had met the man before. On negative reply he casually informed me: That is Mr. Narayanan....he has just retired as the President of India. On recounting the episode, later, to Ms Narayanan, who had taken over as India's ambassador in Sweden, she told me some more such instances that showed their deep mutual attachment as well as her august father's drawn back personality. Apropós nothing special....if I am not very much mistaken, it was during President Narayanan's tennure in Delhi, or soon after that Mario was awarded the nation's higest civillian honor. Those from art and litarary world I cannot even begin to record...some of the finest that I have ever encountered come from therein. I have the most pleasant privilege of continuing to be associated with several of them with growing warmth.
