Hi Venantius,

This discussion has taken a new twist :-)

However, comparing languages, the Portuguese pronounce each and every letter in
a word (well almost), so that psicología is pronounced as 'pisikogía'. "Lazy"
adoptions of Portuguese words into Konkani have left out the last vowels of
most words, such that livro became 'livr', teatro became 'tiatr', and
consequently molho became molh (and then further deteriorated into moll). That
is my point of view, not a scholarly study by any means.

Now coming to Japanese, there was a group of Japanese exchange students who had
come to Melbourne a few years back, one of whom we hosted. When we took her to
the Great Ocean Road to see the "Twelve Apostles" (these are limestone stacks
in the sea, now only a few left), she met others from her group and they
greeted each other with "Addê, addê", which I took to be similar to our own
"arrê" as an expression of surpise.  From this I surmised that the Japanese
pronounce L and R as DD, as in bowdding for bowling. Maybe I'm wrong.

Cheers,

Gabriel.
