Seems the HOWTOs were updated so their m5sum changes. I hacked out the md5sum check and tried again. Built without problem. I booted the iso in qemu. Complained a bit in udev but went all the way to the prompt.

There is no recipe for a that version of the kernel. I know something changed between .15 and .16 that required a patch for unionfs. -- Carlo J.
