Update: I decided to try the SMS thing, so I dug out my cell phone and put the number in. Wouldn't have mattered! It said "The phone number has been sent too many messages or has already been used to confirm an account."
So then I tried filling out the SMS issues form. It said "there were errors" in the Comments field, which disappeared, so I'm not sure whether they got the message or not. I mentioned this thread. Then I tried one more time to fill out the form and it SEEMED to go through. We will see. Sigh. This issue is making GAE VERY difficult to use, at least for me, and it appears, anyone else who has used a Google Apps account. Perhaps the documentation should make it more clear that using a Google Apps account to map your URL is *more trouble than it's worth* !
