Maybe it should be pointed out that GitHub allows for both open and private repos, at a pretty low cost (I have a "Small" account with them for $12 a month and I get over a GB storage, 10 private repos, and unlimited open repos). The biggest difference that should be expected is the use of Git instead of SVN. I don't know if Google is planning/willing to allow for closed source projects, and really I don't care if they do I'm just glad Google code is a free service to open source projects.
