About your suggestion of remembering the PUT. It's not attractive because of the possibility of a DELETE in between the PUT and the GET. It would just expose users to a different kind of race condition. FYI, the zindus addon employs a 'fail fast' approach when either thunderbird or google breaks it's contract.
