I recently politely asked for donations in one of my gadgets (with
about 50,000 users at the time). I got quite a few very generous
donations, and it did help to offset the time and resources I put into
developing the code.

If you must make money, I'd say built gadgets for hire.

Otherwise, either request donations or don't worry about it. Creating
publicly-available gadgets is not a good business, IMO, unless you're
doing it on contract for a company.
