Hi skeeJay, After long delay, I believe I have an answer for you (rather a fix put into production). As you discovered, _IG_Analytics will work if you require the 'analytics' feature. To use _IG_GA, you must use the com.google.gadgets.analytics feature, but this was being filtered out from syndicated gadgets. That has been corrected, so you should be able to include that feature along with _IG_GA. This is the preferred library, so hopefully using it will also resolve your IE8 issue.
