Hello Terence. I stopped using the directory as a mean to get analytics about my iGoogle gadget users, as it has always been very inaccurate, showing ups and downs with no reason. Google Analytics, or the iGoogle Developer Dashboard (http://code.google.com/igoogle/dashboard/) are much more reliable ways to see how your audience is evolving.
I am seeing as well a very sharp drop in the number of users from the directory too, but both Analytics and the Dev Dashboard shows me numbers I expect. I hope this helps.
