I had the same hang issue when just playing around with the tabs and
hit "Places" (not really interested in places, though). Suspected one
of the reg. files would help. TXs, Paul, for short-cutting my deeper
searching and giving the right hint. It works again. Here are the
details

Removing the reg key "active_metadata_tab" will take the tab view away
completely, but one can select e.g. "People" again - avoiding
"Places" ;-)

"active_metadata_tab"="thumbui/people_toggle" will shows the People
tab immediately  when restarting Picasa.
